Anatomic Pathology: Cytopathology

• Schaumann bodies are calcium and protein inclusions inside of multinucleated giant cells and may be found in several granulomatous conditions.

• Hamazaki-Wesenberg bodies are yellow-brown structures of unknown significance associated with histiocytes; they resemble fungi.

• Asteroid bodies are eosinophilic inclusion bodies with radiating lines in the cytoplasm of multinucleated giant cells.

• Birefringent calcium oxalate and calcium carbonate microcalcifications may be found in sarcoidosis.

• Psammoma bodies are concentrically laminated small calcifications most commonly seen in papillary neoplasms. They may be seen in papillary neoplasms of the endometrium, ovary, peritoneum, and thyroid, as well as meningioma. They may also occur in association with benign mesothelial hyperplasia.
