Diagnosis: Blood component administration
• Only normal saline (0.9% sodium chloride) may be administered in the same line as a blood component.
• All other drugs, medications, and solutions must be infused through a separate line, ideally at a separate location.
• The FDA must approve the use of any drug or solution in this manner.
• Documentation must be available to demonstrate safety before the administration of any drug or solution in the same line as a blood component.
• The blood component must not be adversely affected by the addition of the drug or solution.
