1240) Which of the following statements about immunostaining of lung neoplasms is TRUE?

Non-small cell carcinomas stain with thyroid transcription factor 1 (TTF-1) more frequently than small cell carcinomas. TTF-1 stains most small cell carcinomas, pulmonary adenocarcinomas, squamous cell carcinomas, and carcinoids. Carcinomas of the lung are never positive for CDX2. TTF-1 stains most small cell lung carcinomas, and the majority of pulmonary adenocarcinomas, and rarely stains pulmonary squamous cell carcinomas. The majority of pulmonary adenocarcinomas are cytokeratin 7 (CK7) negative, CK20 positive, TTF-1 positive, and CDX2 negative.

• Carcinomas of the lung are generally cytokeratin 7 (CK7) positive and CK20 negative , with a variable proportion expressing thyroid transcription factor-1 (TTF-1).

• Almost all small cell lung carcinomas are TTF-1 positive, a majority of adenocarcinomas are TTF-1 positive, and tumors with squamous differentiation are generally negative.

• Most lung carcinomas are CDX2 negative, except for mucinous pulmonary adenocarcinomas.
