Clinical Pathology: General Principles, Lab Management

• Productivity is defined as the number of products produced divided by the resources used to produce the product.

• In the case of the productivity of laboratory staff, the product is the billable laboratory result, and the resource is the full-time equivalents (FTEs) needed to produce the result.

• Therefore, one can increase staff productivity by increasing the number of tests performed, reducing the number of FTEs, or both.

• Only BILLABLE tests count toward productivity; nonbillable tests, such as those performed for quality control and proficiency testing, do not count for this purpose.
