Clinical Pathology: Transfusion Medicine

• AABB standards provide criteria for the reissue of blood, blood components, tissue, and derivatives that have been returned to the blood bank or transfusion service.

• The container closure should not be disturbed.

• The appropriate temperature should be maintained and this temperature will vary based on the type of product.

• For RBC components, at least one sealed segment of continuous donor tubing should have remained attached to the container. Removed segments can be reattached only after ensuring that the tubing identification numbers on the removed segments and container are identical.

• It is recorded that the product was inspected and is acceptable for reissue.
