Diagnosis: Red cell confirmatory testing
• The ABO group of all red blood cell (RBC) units and the Rh-type of RBC units labeled as Rh-negative must be confirmed using a serologic test by the transfusing facility. The purpose of these measures is to prevent the transfusion of mislabeled, ABO- and Rh-incompatible RBCs.
• Confirmatory testing is performed on a sample from an attached segment. The unit itself is not entered.
• Confirmatory testing for weak D is not required.
• Discrepancies must be resolved before the unit can be issued.
• The facility that collected blood with discrepant results should be notified.
